About Us

In 2005, Violet Eagan and friends founded Brooklyn Ice, a free after-school program
whose mission is to make figure skating an accessible and affordable sport to
Brooklyn children living near Prospect Park.

Through use of the club format and annual re-enrollment, Brooklyn Ice brings
together a diverse group of children in a structure that provides physical training,
recreation, cultural enrichment and the opportunity to form long-term friendships
outside their customary peer groups.

Our participants are recruited from schools neighboring Prospect Park and many
come from vastly under-served communities. All members are expected to make the
program a priority, while maintaining high academic standards. Personal growth
through sport and community is our goal.

Program

Programming runs two afternoons per week at Kate Wollman Rink in Prospect Park
(skating is December-March). During these sessions, participants are provided
on-ice instruction, while in the off-ice months, they enjoy dance, drama, and
creative writing classes. Students also have the opportunity to continue their skating
practice in the spring and summer months at Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers. All
participants are tested on their mastery of skating skills using the United States
Figure Skating Association (USFSA) guidelines. Our season closes with a
celebratory ice event which recognizes the hard work and progress of participants.
